After ending a historic year on a muted note, China’s VC sector is on the up again

A total of 214 venture capital financing deals worth about US$3.96 billion were recorded in China in January, according to China Money Network data.

That’s US$590 million more than December’s total deal value, which concluded an industry-wide felt cool-down of the country’s VC sector in the second half of last year.

Overall, 2018 was a record-breaking year though. KMPG data shows that VC investments in China reached a whopping US$ 70.5 billion in all of 2018, an increase of 52.9 percent from US$ 46.1 billion in 2017.  It was just the third and fourth quarters that saw a dramatic decrease, and now the figures show some signs of recovery.

China’s VC deal value accounted for more than 75% of the US$ 93.5 billion total recorded across Asia and made up about 27.6% of the US$ 254.7 billion venture capital invested worldwide.
